ಬಾಲಕಾಂಡ
ಸಪ್ತ ಪಂಚಾಶ ಸ್ಸರ್ಗಃ

ತತಃ ಸಂತಪ್ತಹೃದಯಃ ಸ್ಮರನ್ ನಿಗ್ರಹಮಾತ್ಮನಃ |
ವಿನಿಶ್ಶ್ವಸ್ಯ ವಿನಿಶ್ಶ್ವಸ್ಯ ಕೃತವೈರೋ ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಾ ||

स॥ ततः महात्मना कृतवैरः आत्मनः निग्रहं ( कृत्वा) विनिश्वस्य विनिश्वस्य स्मरन् संतप्तहृदयः ( अभवत्)

Having become an enemy with the great one, getting hold of himself and sighing repeatedly his heart was heavy with sorrow.

ಸ ದಕ್ಷಿನಾಂ ದಿಶಂ ಗತ್ವಾ ಮಹಿಷ್ಯಾ ಸಹ ರಾಘವ |
ತತಾಪ ಪರಮಂ ಘೋರಂ ವಿಶ್ವಾಮಿತ್ರೋ ಮಹತ್ ತಪಃ|
ಫಲಮೂಲಾಶನೋ ದಾಂತಃ ಚಕಾರ ಸುಮಹತ್ ತಪಃ ||

ಸ|| ಹೇ ರಾಘವ ! ಸಃ ಮಹಿಷ್ಯಾ ಸಃ ದಕ್ಷಿಣಾಂ ದಿಶಂ ಗತ್ವಾ ಪರಮಂ ಘೋರಂ ಮಹತ್ ತಪಃ ಫಲಮೂಲಾಶನೋ ದಾಂತಃ ಚಕಾರ ಸುಮಹತ್ ತಪಃ ತತಾಪ ||

Oh Raghava ! He travelled south along with his queen , and with only fruits and roots as his food he performed severe penance.

ಅಥಾಸ್ಯ ಜಜ್ಞಿರೇ ಪುತ್ತ್ರಾಃ ಸತ್ಯ ಧರ್ಮ ಪರಾಯಣಾಃ|
ಹವಿಷ್ಯಂದೋ ಮಧುಷ್ಯಂದೋ ಧೃಢನೇತ್ರೋ ಮಹಾರಥಃ ||

ಸ|| ಅಥ ಅಸ್ಯ ಪುತ್ತ್ರಾಃ ಹವಿಷ್ಯಂದೋ ಮಧುಷ್ಯಂದೋ ಧೃಡನೇತ್ರೋ ಮಹಾರಥಃ ಸತ್ಯ ಧರ್ಮ ಪರಾಯಣಃ ಜಜ್ಞಿರೇ ||

There he bore sons by name Havishyanda, Madhushyanda, Dhrudhanetra and Maharatha who are dedicated to truth and righteousness.

ಪೂರ್ಣೇ ವರ್ಷ ಸಹಸ್ರೇ ತು ಬ್ರಹ್ಮ ಲೋಕ ಪಿತಾಮಹಃ |
ಅಬ್ರವೀನ್ಮಧುರಂ ವಾಕ್ಯಂ ವಿಶ್ವಾಮಿತ್ರಂ ತಪೋಧನಮ್||

ಸ|| ಸಹಸ್ರೇ ವರ್ಷ ಪೂರ್ಣೇ ತು ಬ್ರಹ್ಮ ಲೋಕ ಪಿತಾಮಹಃ ವಿಶ್ವಾಮಿತ್ರಂ ತಪೋಧನಂ ಮಧುರಂ ವಾಕ್ಯಂ ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ ||

After about one thousand years of penance, Brahma the father of the three worlds spoke with Viswamitra in sweet tones.

ಜಿತಾ ರಾಜರ್ಷಿ ಲೋಕಾಸ್ತೇ ತಪಸಾ ಕುಶಿಕಾತ್ಮಜ |
ಅನೇನ ತಪಸಾ ತ್ವಾಂತು ರಾಜರ್ಷಿಃ ಇತಿ ವಿದ್ಮಹೇ ||

ಸ|| ಹೇ ಕುಶಿಕಾತ್ಮಜ ! ಹೇ ರಾಜರ್ಷಿ ! ತೇ ತಪಸಾ ಲೋಕಾಃ ಜಿತಾ | ತ್ವಾಂ ಅನೇನ ತಪಸಾ ರಾಜರ್ಷಿಃ ಇತಿ ವಿದ್ಮಹೇ ತು |

Oh Son of Kusika ! Oh Rajarshi ! With your penance you have won over the worlds. With this penance you will be known as Rajarshi !

ಏವಮುಕ್ತ್ವಾ ಮಹಾತೇಜಾ ಜಗಾಮ ಸಹ ದೇವತೈಃ |
ತ್ರಿವಿಷ್ಟಪಂ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಲೋಕಂ ಲೋಕಾನಾಂ ಪರಮೇಶ್ವರ ||

ಸ|| ಮಹಾತೇಜಾ ಲೋಕಾನಾಂ ಪರಮೇಶ್ವರಃ ಏವಂ ಉಕ್ತ್ವಾ ದೇವತಾಃ ಸಹ ಜಗಾಮ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಲೋಕಂ ತ್ರಿವೀಷ್ಟಪಂ (ಚ) ||

Then the supremely radiant Brahma went back to the divine world of Brahmaloka along with all other Devas.

ವಿಶ್ವಾಮಿತ್ರೋಪಿ ತತ್ ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ಹ್ರಿಯಾ ಕಿಂಚಿದವಾಜ್ಞ್ಮುಖಃ |
ದುಃಖೇನ ಮಹತಾ ವಿಷ್ಟಃ ಸಮನ್ಯುರಿದಂ ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ ||

ಸ|| ತತ್ ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ವಿಶ್ವಾಮಿತ್ರಃ ಅಪಿ ಕಿಂಚಿದ್ ಹ್ರಿಯಾ ಅವಾಜ್ಞ್ಮುಖಃ ದುಃಖೇನ ಮಹತಾ ವಿಷ್ಟಃ ಸಮನ್ಯುಃ ಇದಂ ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ ||

Hearing that Viswamitra felt slighted and with his head hung down, he spoke as follows.

ತಪಶ್ಚತು ಮಹತ್ ತಪ್ತಂ ರಾಜರ್ಷಿರಿತಿ ಮಾಂ ವಿದುಃ |
ದೇವಸ್ಸರ್ಷಿಗಣಾಸ್ಸರ್ವೇ ನಾಸ್ತಿ ಮನ್ಯೇ ತಪಃ ಫಲಮ್ ||

ಸ|| ಮಹತ್ ತಪಂ ತಪಶ್ಚತು ದೇವಾ ಋಷಿ ಗಣಾಃ ಸರ್ವೇ ರಾಜರ್ಷಿ ಇತಿ ಮಾವಿದುಃ | ನ ತಪಃ ಫಲಂ ಅಸ್ತಿ ಮನ್ಯೇ||

"A great penance has been performed. The Devas and Rishis think of me as a Rajarshi only. I feel that I have not obtained the fruit of my penance".

ಇತಿ ನಿಶ್ಚಿತ್ಯ ಮನಸಾ ಭೂಯ ಏವ ಮಹಾತಪಾಃ|
ತಪಶ್ಚಕಾರ ಕಾಕುತ್‍ಸ್ಥ ಪರಮಂ ಪರಮಾತ್ಮವಾನ್ ||

ಸ|| ಹೇ ಕಾಕುತ್‍ಸ್ಥ ! ಮಹಾ ತಪಾಃ ಇತಿ ನಿಶ್ಚಿತ್ಯ ಭೂಯ ಏವ ಪರಮಾತ್ಮವಾನ್ ಮನಸಾ ಪರಮಂ ತಪಃ ಚಕಾರ ||

'Oh Kakutstha ! That great performer of penance having thought over again undertook rigorous penance with his mind focussed on the Supreme being'.

ಏತಸ್ಮಿನ್ನೇವ ಕಾಲೇತು ಸತ್ಯವಾದೀ ಜಿತೇಂದ್ರಿಯಃ |
ತ್ರಿಶಂಕುರಿತಿ ವಿಖ್ಯಾತಾ ಇಕ್ಷ್ವಾಕು ಕುಲವರ್ಧನಃ ||

ಸ|| ಏತಸ್ಮಿನ್ನೇವ ಕಾಲೇ ತ್ರಿಶಂಕುರಿತಿ ವಿಖ್ಯಾತಾ ಸತ್ಯವಾದೀ ಜಿತೇಂದ್ರಿಯಃ ಇಕ್ಷ್ವಾಕು ಕುಲವರ್ಧನಃ (ಆಸೀತ್) ||

At the same time there was one Ikshwaku king by name Trisamku , a follower of truth, one who has control of his sensory organs and is well known.

ತಸ್ಯ ಬುದ್ಧಿ ಸಮುತ್ಪನ್ನಾ ಯಜೇಯಮಿತಿ ರಾಘವ|
ಗಛ್ಛೇಯಂ ಸಶರೀರೇಣ ದೇವಾನಾಂ ಪರಮಾಂ ಗತಿಮ್ ||

ಸ|| ಹೇ ಆಘವ ! ದೇವಾನಾಂ ಪರಮಾಂಗತಿಂ ಸ ಶರೀರಂ ಗಚ್ಛೇಯಂ ಯಜೇಯಂ ಇತಿ ತಸ್ಯ ಬುದ್ಧಿಃ ಸಮುತ್ಪನ್ನಾ |

O Raghava ! He thought of performing a sacrifice for going to the abode of Devas along with his body !

ಸ ವಸಿಷ್ಠಂ ಸಮಾಹೂಯ ಕಥಯಾಮಾಸ ಚಿಂತಿತಮ್|
ಅಶಕ್ಯ ಮಿತಿ ಚಾಪ್ಯುಕ್ತೋ ವಸಿಷ್ಠೇನ ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಾ ||

ಸ|| ಸಃ ವಸಿಷ್ಠಂ ಸಮಾಹೂಯ ( ತಸ್ಯ) ಚಿಂತಿತಂ ಕಥಯಾಮಾಸ ! ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಾ ವಸಿಷ್ಠೇನ ಅಶಕ್ಯಮ್ ಇತಿ ಚ ಉಕ್ತಃ ||

He met Sage Vasishta and told him of his desire. Venerable Vasishta told him that it is not possible.

ಪ್ರತ್ಯಾಖ್ಯಾತೋ ವಸಿಷ್ಠೇನ ಸ ಯಯೌ ದಕ್ಷಿಣಾಂ ದಿಶಮ್ |
ತತಸ್ತತ್ಕರ್ಮ್ಯ ಸಿದ್ಧ್ಯರ್ಥಂ ಪುತ್ತ್ರಾಂಸ್ತಸ್ಯ ಗತೋ ನೃಪಃ ||
ವಾಸಿಷ್ಠಾ ದೀರ್ಘ ತಪಸಃ ತಪೋ ಯತ್ರ ಹಿ ತೇಪಿರೇ|
ತ್ರಿಶಂಕುಸ್ಸು ಮಹಾತೇಜಾಃ ಶತಂ ಪರಮಭಾಸ್ವರಮ್ ||

ಸ|| ವಸಿಷ್ಠೇನ ಪ್ರತಿ ಆಖ್ಯಾತೌ ಸಃ ದಕ್ಷಿಣಾಂ ದಿಶಮ್ ಯಯೌ | ತತಃ ತತ್ ನೃಪಃ ತ್ರಿಶಂಕುಃ ಸತ್ಕರ್ಮ ಸಿದ್ಧ್ಯರ್ಥಂ ಮಹಾತೇಜಾಃ ಪರಮಭಾಸ್ವರಂ ತಸ್ಯ ಶತಂ ಪುತ್ತ್ರಾಂ ವಾಸಿಷ್ಠಾ ದೀರ್ಘ ತಪಸಃ ತಪಃ ಯತ್ರ ತೇಪಿರೇ (ತತ್ರ) ಗತಃ ||

Having been turned down by Vasishta, he went in southerly direction. To accomplish his desire he went to that place where the highly radiant sons of Vasishta were performing penance for a long time.

ವಸಿಷ್ಠಪುತ್ತ್ರಾನ್ ದದೃಶೇ ತಪ್ಯಮಾನಾನ್ ಯಶಸ್ವಿನಃ|
ಸೋs ಭಿಗಮ್ಯ ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಃ ಸರ್ವಾನೇವ ಗುರೋ ಸುತಾನ್ ||

ಸ|| ಸಃ ಅಭಿಗಮ್ಯ ಯಶಸ್ವಿನಃ ಸರ್ವಾನೇವ ಗುರೋಃ ಸುತಾನ್ ತಪ್ಯಮಾನಾನ್ ವಸಿಷ್ಠ ಪುತ್ರಾನ್ ದದರ್ಶ |

The famed king saw the master's sons doing their penance.

ಅಭಿವಾದ್ಯಾನುಪೂರ್ವೇಣ ಹ್ರಿಯಾ ಕಿಂಚಿದವಾಜ್ಞ್ಮುಖಃ |
ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ ಮಹಾಭಾಗಾನ್ ಸರ್ವಾನೇವ ಕೃತಾಂಜಲಿಃ ||

ಸ|| ಸರ್ವಾನೇವ ಮಹಾಭಾಗಾನ್ ಅಭಿವಾದ್ಯ ಅನುಪೂರ್ವೇಣ ಹ್ರಿಯಾ ಕಿಂಚಿದ್ ಅವಾಜ್ಞ್ಮುಖುಃ ಕೃತಾಂಜಲಿಃ ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ |

Bowing to all the respected ones , with his head hung down and feeling a little ashamed he paid obeisance to all and spoke.

ಶರಣಂ ವಃ ಪ್ರಪದ್ಯೇsಹಂ ಶರಣ್ಯಾನ್ ಶರಣಾಗತಃ|
ಪ್ರತ್ಯಾಖ್ಯಾತೋಸ್ಮಿ ಭದ್ರಂ ವೋ ವಸಿಷ್ಟೇನ ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಾ ||

ಸ|| ವಃ ಶರಣ್ಯಾನ್ ಅಹಂ ಶರಣಾಗತಃ ಶರಣಂ ಪ್ರಪದ್ಯೇ | ಭದ್ರಂ ವೋ | ವಸಿಷ್ಠೇನ ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಾ ಪ್ರತಿ ಆಖ್ಯಾತೋ ಅಸ್ಮಿ |

"I am seeking protection from you who can give protection. May all be well with you. My request has been denied by sage Vasishta".

ಯಷ್ಟು ಕಾಮೋ ಮಹಾಯಜ್ಞಂ ತದನುಜ್ಞಾತು ಮರ್ಹಥ |
ಗುರು ಪುತ್ತ್ರಾನಹಂ ಸರ್ವಾನ್ ನಮಸ್ಕೃತ್ಯ ಪ್ರಸಾದಯೇ ||

ಸ|| ಮಹಾಯಜ್ಞಂ ಯಷ್ಟುಂ ಕಾಮಃ | ತತ್ ಅನುಜ್ಞಾತುಂ ಅರ್ಹಥ | ಸರ್ವಾನ್ ಗುರುಪುತ್ತ್ರಾನ್ ನಮಸ್ಕೃತ್ಯ ಅಹಂ ಪ್ರಸಾದಯೇ |

"I am desirous of performing a great sacrifice. I am seeking your approval. Paying obeisance to all my master's sons I am seeking their permission".

ಶಿರಸಾ ಪ್ರಣತೋ ಯಾಚೇ ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣಾಂಸ್ತಪಸಿ ಸ್ಥಿತಾನ್|
ತೇ ಮಾಂ ಭವಂತಸ್ಸಿದ್ಧ್ಯರ್ಥಂ ಯಾಜಯಂತು ಸಮಾಹಿತಾಃ |
ಸ ಶರೀರೋ ಯಥಾಹಂ ಹಿ ದೇವಲೋಕಮವಾಪ್ನುಯಾಮ್ ||

ಸ|| ತಪಸಿ ಸ್ಥಿತಾನ್ ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣಾಂ ಶಿರಸಾ ಪ್ರಣತೋ ಯಾಚೇ | ತೇ ಸಮಾಹಿತಾಃ ಮಾಂ ಭವಂತ ಸಿದ್ಧ್ಯರ್ಥಂ ಯಾಜಯಂತು | ಯಥಾ ಅಹಂ ಸ ಶರೀರ ದೇವಲೋಕಮವಾಪ್ನುಯಾಮ್ ||

"I am paying respects to the Brahmans who are performing penance. All of you assembled here can fulfill my desire and conduct the sacrifice. I would like to go to heaven along with my body".

ಪ್ರತ್ಯಾಖ್ಯಾತೋ ವಸಿಷ್ಠೇನ ಗತಿಮನ್ಯಾಂ ತಪೋಧನಾಃ |
ಗುರು ಪುತ್ತ್ರಾನ್ ಋತೇ ಸರ್ವಾನ್ ನಾಹಂ ಪಶ್ಯಾಮಿ ಕಾಂಚನ ||

ಸ|| ವಸಿಷ್ಠೇನ ಪ್ರತಿ ಆಖ್ಯಾತಃ | ಸರ್ವಾನ್ ಗುರುಪುತ್ತ್ರಾನ್ ಋತೇ ಅನ್ಯಾಂ ಗತಿಂ ನ ಅಪಶ್ಯಾಮಿ |

"Vasishta has denied my request. I do not see any other way than approaching you my master's sons!"

ಇಕ್ಷ್ವಾಕೂಣಾಂ ಹಿ ಸರ್ವೇಷಾಂ ಪುರೋಧಾಃ ಪರಮಾಂ ಗತಿಂ |
ಪುರೋಧಸಸ್ತು ವಿದ್ವಾಂಸಃ ತಾರಯಂತಿ ಸದಾ ನೃಪಾನ್ |
ತಸ್ಮಾದನಂತರಂ ಸರ್ವೇ ಭವಂತೋ ದೈವತಂ ಮಮ ||

ಸ|| ಸರ್ವೇಷಾಂ ಇಕ್ಷ್ವಾಕೂನಾಂ ಪುರೋಧಾಃ ಪರಮಾಂ ಗತಿಃ | ಪುರೋಧಸಃ ಅಸ್ತು ವಿದ್ವಾಂಸಃ (ತೇ ) ಸದಾ ನೃಪಾನ್ ತಾರಯಂತಿ | ತಸ್ಮಾತ್ ಅನಂತರಂ ಸರ್ವೇ ಭವಂತಃ ( ಏವ) ದೈವತಂ ಮಮ ||

"For all Ikshwakus the venerable Vasishta is the one to lead the way. The priests are knowledgeable people. They always help out the king. After Vasishta you are all my gods".

ಇತ್ಯಾರ್ಷೇ ಶ್ರೀಮದ್ರಾಮಾಯಣೇ ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕೀಯೇ ಆದಿಕಾವ್ಯೇ ಸಪ್ತ ಪಂಚಾಶ ಸ್ಸರ್ಗಃ ||
